Artificial Intelligence, The Designer’s Assistant

By: Tyler Gobberdiel

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a buzzword in nearly every industry, and design is no exception. From generative design tools to AI-powered image editing software, we are increasingly seeing AI incorporated in many aspects of the design process. With these advancements comes a growing concern shared by many; will AI replace designers? While this fear is understandable, it overlooks the true potential of AI as a tool that can empower designers to enhance their creativity and efficiency, rather than replace them entirely.

AI can process extreme amounts of data, recognizing patterns, and performing repetitive tasks at increasingly absurd speed, but it still lacks the emotional intelligence and nuanced understanding that designers bring to the table. The mistake comes when AI is used to brand without the pairing of a designer. We have all seen the results that feel not quite right, lacking the finesse and emotional foundations that a qualified designer brings often resulting in the damaging of the brands reputation and integrity. It’s inauthentic. People see through it.

For designers, AI should be viewed not as a competitor, but rather as a tool that handles tedious tasks, helps generate ideas, and enhances workflow. We are seeing AI increasingly incorporated into programs we use every day, streamlining processes and improving functionality. This frees up designers to focus on higher-level creative work, refining designs, and experimenting with new visual concepts. In this sense, AI acts as a powerful support system for the designer rather than a replacement.

Just as computers changed the industry (really, not that long ago), we as designers must continue to adapt, learn, and incorporate these new tools into our workflows. AI can elevate the role of designers, allowing them to focus on what they do best—thinking critically, solving problems, and creating meaningful, humancentric designs.
