There’s a common misconception that emotional branding is just a nice-to-have feel-good layer on top of the real business strategy – the “soft” side of marketing. But in reality, emotional branding is a critical part of connecting with the audience. And when it’s done well, emotion drives awareness, loyalty, and ultimately, market dominance.
The truth is that consumers don’t make many buying decisions based solely on logic. They also use their emotions, how something makes them feel. Smart brands know this and build every touchpoint, from packaging to marketing, around a specific emotional payoff. These are the brands that rise above the noise and claim leadership positions in their category.
Let’s explore a few examples:
Glossier – Skincare and makeup products
- Visual Identity: Glossier disrupted beauty by leaning hard into minimalism and authenticity. Packaging in soft pinks and clean lines. Shipping boxes include reflective silver interiors – perfect for selfies and unboxing.
- Messaging: Its tagline, “Skin first. Makeup second. Smile always,” reinforces a beauty-from-within mindset. Voice is casual, inclusive and intimate – like a friend who happens to know all the good products.
- Emotions Evoked: Confidence, relatability, belonging.
Liquid Death – Canned mountain water
- Visual Identity: Liquid Death’s cans look like they belong at a concert, not a yoga class. With tattoo-style graphics, heavy metal fonts, and skulls galore, the design rebels against every wellness convention.
- Messaging: Its tagline, “Murder Your Thirst,” sets the tone. Other messages like “Death to Plastic” and “Don’t be scared, it’s just water” bring rebellion and dark humor to a healthy habit.
- Emotions Evoked: Rebellion, irreverence, boldness.

YETI – Premium coolers, drinkware, and outdoor gear
- Visual Identity: Matte finishes, earth tones and rugged, industrial packaging. Lifestyle photography shows products in use in extremeenvironments (deserts, rivers, mountaintops).
- Messaging: The tagline “Built for the Wild” speaks directly to the outdoor elite. Product stories and branded documentaries heroize durability, adventure, and self-reliance, inviting people into a world where ruggedness is a badge of honor.
- Emotions Evoked: Adventurous, prepared, proud to go further.
